The iconic Desert Road stretch of SH1 between Tūrangi and Waiōuru has reopened after a strategic two-month closure that allowed NZTA to rebuild 28 lane kilometres and completely repair the Mangatoetoenui Bridge. The closure had forced 800 trucks daily onto a 40-minute detour, costing the industry approximately $100,000 per day.
"As well as improved productivity, the reopening is good news for supply chain resilience," says Transporting New Zealand, which supported the temporary closure to enable faster completion of these essential works.
While small towns along the detour route like Ohakune experienced a business boost, freight operators will welcome the return to direct routing and reduced operating costs.
